Identifying Your Business Type
The North American Industry Classification System (NAICS)
The Comptroller’s office is in the process of updating business descriptions associated with tax accounts on our records. We use information about the type of businesses in Texas to help us estimate revenue, answer legislative requests, and provide taxpayers like you with industry-specific information about changes in the tax laws that might affect you.
We use the North American Industry Classification System, or NAICS, which is a product of the U.S. Census Bureau. It is easy to determine the NAICS code associated with your business.
The web address is http://www.census.gov/eos/www/naics/. In the upper-left-hand corner of the page there is a "keyword search." Enter one word that generally describes your business. For example, if you’re in the restaurant business, enter "restaurant" and get a complete listing of NAICS codes for the restaurant industry.
Once you have identified the code for your business, provide us with your taxpayer number, the business location (outlet) number and address, and the recommended NAICS code, by email at tax.help@cpa.state.tx.us, or you may also call us toll-free at 1-800-252-5555, or in Austin 463-4600. Once we have processed your request, a new permit will be issued with the updated information.
